From the moment we walked into Almond’s old retail store in Newport Beach, I was a fan. Not only are their boards stunning to look at, the glassers at Waterman’s Guild are some of the best around, but their shapes are clean and precise. They offer a complete range of longboards, mid lengths, and shorter boards, with every shape being well thought out and filling their niche perfectly.
I first met Eden Saul, the founder and shaper behind Dead Kooks surfboards, six years ago down in Santa Barbara. The point waves were about shin high at best, but as I rode one of his aptly named 11’11 shapes I was impressed with the craftsmanship and glassing on the board. We stayed in touch and before he returned to his home on the Gold Coast of Australia I had him shape me a 9’6 Nausea, which has been my go-to log ever since.
When you visit the lineups of the Pacific Northwest, some of the brands you’ll see on the regular are Xcel, O’Neill, and sometimes some Rip Curl’s and some other brands scattered here and there. However, one brand you don’t see so often is Billabong, and I’m here to say that’s a damn shame. Presently, Billabong makes some of the best, most flexible, and warm wetsuits around.

When I would daydream about my surfing, it was usually riding a high performance shortboard on some exotic reef pass....

Opportunity's are something we all deserve. For some, those opportunities can be life changing. Each year, we invite kids from the Boys & Girls Club to learn how to surf. In partnership with the Surfrider Foundation, these kids get the opportunity to not only surf, but to learn the value of being stewards of the land.
We launched our ecommerce website in the spring of 2014. Much like our retail store, it's been a constant learning experience from day one. The good, the bad, and the downright "what were we thinking"! Through it all, we've continuously made every effort to keep improving and create a better experience for our customers.
It was 7 days prior to this year’s Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic and the weather forecast was calling for 40mph south winds and heavy rain. After 10 plus years of running the contest, I had gained enough experience to not enter panic mode, yet.
The Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic is on for the 23rd year! We are excited to be back with a live event after two years of virtual events. This year’s contest holds special meaning to the northwest surfing community as we will start off the event Friday evening with a paddle-out in honor of long time contest participant and avid northwest surfer, John Newman. We will also celebrate others we’ve lost in the last two years.
