2017 Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic And Brewfest

Last weekend’s 19th Annual Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic and Brewfest marked the start to this year’s Fall contest season. Holding true to the type of conditions that this time of year in Oregon can generate, each day offered drastically different weather. Saturday was blue skies, light winds and warm weather. The swell was tiny but clean, just big enough to run a really fun event. With the forecast on Sunday calling for a storm to move in by 11:00am, contest organizers decided to run as many heats as possible on Saturday. The last heat didn’t finish until almost 7:00pm, just as the sun started to set and darkness would become an issue.

Coinciding with Saturdays contest, the brewfest put on by Pelican Brewing was a major success. 17 Breweries from around the state brought in their beers for an afternoon of tasting and good times. With the sun shining and live music blasting by the Mister E Band, the tent was full and rocking all day. Thanks to the generosity of the Pelican and all of the participating breweries, 100% of the proceeds generated by the brewfest are donated to the Pacific City Skate Park. We can’t thank them enough for helping us reach our goal!

Sunday heats started at 8:00am sharp and the weather and conditions were still very favorable. The semi-finals for the men’s divisions finished up by 10:00am and we went quickly into the finals hoping to beat the weather. Just as the forecast had predicted however, the storm moved in right at 11am and the conditions deteriorated quickly. The ocean was a mess, but the contestants battled their way through the finals. In the end, only a few heats had to be run in the poor conditions, which hardly put a damper on a really fun weekend.

The goal of the event is to raise money for the construction of the Pacific City Skate Park. Over the past 6 years, we have raised close to $50,000. The numbers are still be counted, but it is looking like this year’s event has generated another $15,000! Thank you to all of our sponsors, vendors, participants, brewers and spectators who helped make this possible! A very special thank you also to all of the volunteers who helped put on this event. We couldn’t do it without you and you made this year’s festivities the best yet!

It was 7 days prior to this year’s Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic and the weather forecast was calling for 40mph south winds and heavy rain. After 10 plus years of running the contest, I had gained enough experience to not enter panic mode, yet.
