The Egg Surfboard

The Egg Surfboard

Surfing up here in the Pacific Northwest requires a board that can handle a wide variety of waves from the small and fun to the bigger and faster. Very few surfboard designs handle such a wide variety of surf as well as the egg surfboard, a design that combines excellent wave catching ability with modern maneuverability and performance.

For many, if not most surfers, it truly is the perfect 'one board quiver'. The classic egg shape features a moderately wide continuous curve outline ending in a rounded tail, relaxed rocker, ample foil thickness, soft rails in front with harder rails in the rear, a simple flat bottom with mild tail V, and can be ridden as either a thruster or with a 2+1 fin set-up. With a wave range from small to overhead, this is a great design for the beginner through intermediate surfer, providing great paddling and wave catching, stability, speed and ease of turning.
A variation on the egg is the speed egg, featuring a bit narrower outline, a tad more rocker often incorporated with a single to concave bottom to generate higher speeds, and primarily ridden as a thruster. With a range from smaller into the well overhead arena, this is a great board for the intermediate through advanced surfer who wants to enjoy the pure fun attributes of the egg along with higher performance surfing.
Whether classic egg or speed egg, these boards can be shaped in a variety of widths and lengths ranging from mid 6' to mid 8'. And here at Moment Surf Company, we feature a variety of egg shapes designed for our local waves, and really enjoy working with surfers to provide the perfect egg shape for the rider. “How would you describe the Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic” is a question I get asked during interviews ahead of each year’s contest. The simple answer is to say that it’s a local surf contest put on by a dedicated group of volunteers. The truth is that the contest is something more than that. It has its own soul. It has a life that we and the organizers before us can’t take credit for. I would like to think we had something to do with it, but the reality is the Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic has become something far beyond anything anyone ever imagined.

It's that time of year again, and we're opening registration for our 2025 Youth Surf Camps! Youth surf camps are open to kids ages 10 - 16 with some flexibility, and all levels are welcome!

Both cheers of support and loud laughter were heard throughout Pacific City this past weekend as surfers and spectators gathered on the beach to root on the participants in the annual Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic. This year marks the 25th running of the beloved community event.
Started in 1998 by Bob and Michelle Ledbetter, the contest has grown to become a staple of the NW surf community. It not only attracts surfers throughout Oregon, but this year saw people from Canada, California, Washington and even Hawaii make the pilgrimage.
