The Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic is on for the 23rd year! We are excited to be back with a live event after two years of virtual events. This year’s contest holds special meaning to the northwest surfing community as we will start off the event Friday evening with a paddle-out in honor of long time contest participant and avid northwest surfer, John Newman. We will also celebrate others we’ve lost in the last two years.
We are proud to announce that this year’s event includes an equal number of women/girls and men/boys divisions. The contest is nearly full so sign up fast or contact us to be on the waitlist. In addition to the surfing competition, contest and skatepark merchandise and our collectible contest posters by artist Todd Fischer, will be available for purchase. The silent and Coastal Craft auctions are back by popular demand. This year’s silent auction will feature local artists, photographers, and board makers as well as local stay and dine packages and surf industry products. Coastal Craft brings together an eclectic blend of surfboard shapers and manufacturers to celebrate the time honored tradition of handcrafted surfboards. The shaper picks the general shape/model of the board and the highest bidder works with the shaper to fine tune the specs, a true custom experience. You will have the opportunity to bid on a hybrid shortboard or groveler from NME, a classic longboard by Murdey, a mid length plug from Niff, a mini simmons by Brand, a retro log from Bauer and a fish by Leatherman. All Coastal Craft blanks are donated by Fiberglass Supply and the infamous El Brado glasses each board. Ben and Jeff’s Burgers and Tacos, Hearth and Table wood fired pizza, and Pelican Brewing beverages will be available throughout the weekend. Local surfer Pat King, and his band, Groundswell, will be covering your favorite music Friday night under the tent. Zhug Life Surf Shop owner and musician Bryan Nichols and his band, Zhug, will play on Saturday.
All the proceeds from this year’s Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic go directly to the development of the Pacific City Skatepark phase two. Years of efforts, along with the added success of the 2019 contest/brewfest and the inaugural Coastal Craft shaping event, the 2020 virtual events, a Tony Hawk Foundation grant and the generosity and ingenuity of Dreamland Skateparks helped pave the way to the completion of phase one in 2020. The Kiwanda Corridor Project (KCP) is the implementation process of the recently completed Cape Kiwanda Master Plan and the PC/Woods Parking Management Plan. The leaders of the KCP have worked with the Nestucca Valley Community Alliance (the non-profit who manages the skatepark) to incorporate the community and skate park into the overall project plan. The Kiwanda Corridor Project is an opportunity to improve livability for our residents and visitors of Pacific City by connecting recreation, commercial and residential places in Pacific City/Woods and resolving existing traffic and parking issues. The incorporation of the community and skate park into the project has opened some funding resources to be redirected to phase two of the skatepark. That TLT grant along with the 2021 virtual event have helped us raise two-thirds of the necessary funds for phase two. There’s no doubt that this has been a true effort for and by the community. We look forward to bringing the community together once again to continue the effort to build phase two of the skatepark. With nearly 200 participants already registered and a lineup of northwest musicians, artists, beer and cuisine, this year’s event is geared up to be one of the best ever.
