Brody Rincon Road Trip

My family decided that we were going to take a late-Spring road trip Santa Barbara, California. That’s 795 miles in the car with my 2-year-old sister!! I was stoked to be going to the beach after a long, cold winter, but not about the long drive.

We left on Friday and made it to San Francisco that night. We were getting closer to warmer water and the famous Rincon Point, which is also known as “The Queen of the Coast”. It’s a right-hand point break and since I’m a regular foot, those are my favorite waves.

We made it down to Santa Barbara the next afternoon and I was excited to go surf the next morning. We woke up and it was a little rainy and kinda cold, but that wasn’t going to stop us since we’re from the Northwest. The swell was a little big for me so it was a lot of paddling, turtle rolls and I only got a few waves with my dad’s help.

The next day we checked out Rincon again and the sun was out, the crowd was mellow and swell dropped a bit so I was able to get a bunch waves on a 5’5” Cubicle Trekkie.

The following day, since we had so much fun at Rincon we went back for more. Lucky for us it was just as good, so we suited up and had a great session. That afternoon I got to skate the SB skatepark.

The next 2 days were flat so we went to checkout the Skate One factory where they make Powell Peralta Skateboards and Bones Wheels and then we also went to the Santa Barbara zoo. Both were really cool.

On the last day we went to Butterfly Beach for a family day and I spent the whole time in the water riding my Catch Surf Stump in some little dumpy beach break. The waves were hard to ride, but still super fun!

Both cheers of support and loud laughter were heard throughout Pacific City this past weekend as surfers and spectators gathered on the beach to root on the participants in the annual Cape Kiwanda Longboard Classic. This year marks the 25th running of the beloved community event.
Started in 1998 by Bob and Michelle Ledbetter, the contest has grown to become a staple of the NW surf community. It not only attracts surfers throughout Oregon, but this year saw people from Canada, California, Washington and even Hawaii make the pilgrimage.
Welcome to the team Justin Buford! Justin has been a part of the shop since we opened in 2010. He was a true local grom who would spend his days skateboarding in our parking lot and washing rental wetsuits when he wasn’t in school. His family lived just up the street and his step-dad is one of the best surfers in town. His brother-in-law comes from the legendary South County Surf family the Ledbetters. Surfing is who and what Justin is, it’s in his blood.
It felt a lot like home, Ireland. I suppose in a bizarre way it is, as my ancestors planted their roots in county Sligo on the North West coast of the country in the early 1700's after immigrating from Scotland. Ireland has been at the top of my travel list since long before I found out there was surf there. I formed images in my head of what the landscape would look like from seeing pictures, videos and hearing stories of infamous rocky basalt point breaks and shallow heaving slabs. Every image I had crafted fell short in comparison to seeing it all in person for the first time.
